A tourniquet is a compression bandage that is applied to an arm or leg to stop very serious wounds and bleeding. It is a temporary emergency measure to be used to save a life.

A lot of blood flowing from a wound indicates an arterial hemorrhage. The victim loses (too) much blood in a short time. If it is not possible to stop the severe bleeding, there is a chance that the victim will die from exsanguination. An official and safe tourniquet must then be applied. After that, the injured person should be transported to the hospital as soon as possible.

By clamping the body part tightly above the wound, you limit blood flow and prevent as much blood loss as possible. It can save the life of a victim. Too much blood loss is life-threatening.

The C-A-T Tourniquet was developed after it was found that in military conflicts of violence, bleeding was the main cause and accounted for the vast majority (91%) in the level of “preventable deaths”.
